"It is great to talk to my family overseas from the TV in our living room but my wife and I are distracted by the way the camera zooms in and out then selects one of us to the exclusion of the other. Can we control this beast or does it have a mind of its own?"
"First off, this camera is WAY overpriced for what you get. But if you want to Skype with your TV or use the motion controls you don't really have any choice do you?
So here's the harsh reality - the Samsung TV is not a computer. If it were, you could get a MUCH better camera for less $$$. I searched and searched and this one was the only model actually available for purchase.
Pros: It works! Easy setup It works! I've been using to Skype with family around the country Wide angle lens Privacy cover
Cons: weak microphones mediocre picture quality no settings to adjust mic sensitivity
If you've got your couch set up at a good viewing distance for a 46" or larger set, the microphones built into this camera are barely going to pick up your voice unless you shout. When we Skype with our family, we have to move within 4 feet of the TV if we want to be heard.
I wish there was a more competitive market for TV compatible cameras, because there would almost certainly be better options available if there were. But, this camera does work."
